If you ever have the chance to read a wonderful book, by a dear friend of mine and Talkin' Pets, please do. It is titled "When Elephants Weep" written by Jeffrey Masson. The book has been released for several years now but details the emotions that our furry and feathered... friends go through in life. Explaining in story form, that they are able to experience love, loss, anger, sadness... the everyday emotions that we, humans, deal with from day to day.
It is a highly recommended read by myself, not only because it deals with the lives of our animal friends but makes you think twice about their encounters with their own living species compared to ours, as humans.
Question: Do you believe that animals, although most do not speak our language, are capable of experiencing the same emotions that we, humans, feel?
Please let us know your thoughts and stories...
Some animals yes. I have seen many a dog very happy or very sad, depending on the situation. Maybe we read alil to much into them, and humanize them alil. But, they are better than most people.

All you have to do is live closely with them for a while to see this.

any pet owner has witnessed their pet demonstrate a full range of emotions. Communication through body language further emphasizes all of the above. Prayers for your Bro, Bro. John.
Of course, it is in their voices, it is in their faces and body language.
You betcha they do. They may not outwardly show feelings when they have hurt feelings but you can bet that they feel it inside and they do not forget... Jody Coles, Bryan, Texas

It's obvious animals have emotions that correlate to ours, such as joy, grief, sometimes even embarassment(my cats!). Unfortunately, because people see these emotional states in animals, they also tend to attribute spite, anger, stupidity, and jealousy to them. While I don't believe it's appropriate to go either extreme when discussing animals' emotional or 'moral' states, there is a real need for humans to understand and respect the sentience of animals and treat them as 'brothers' not commodities...their value to us is so much greater than any price that might be put on them!
Yes, it is true that animals feel the same emotions that we as humans feel. You can see this in any animal that has become attached to a person. If that person goes through an emotional time you can see the animal go through it too. There have been times when I have been crying or very upset and my dog will come to comfort me. There have been times when he would even cry with me.
they certainly can be afraid, unhappy, sad, lonely, happy, etc. So, animals do have many of our emotions.
I have a Chihuahua (hope spelling is correct) and though he can't talk, he can communicate excellently. No trouble letting us humans know when he is happy and is very clear when he is unhappy. I believe all animals can and do experience the same emotions that we do.
Oh yea... They don't shed tears per say, but you know when something isn't right, and you can't hear them laugh, but I have detected a smile or two when things were good...
I believe the emotions of animals are not as distored as ours. Theirs are more clear without the twisted thinking ours are subjected to. Animals have more direct associations and are honest in their emotion and it's expression.
I have rescued and rehabilitated a large number ofdogs and there is no doubt in my mind that they experience feelings and emotions. What really blows me away is the way a small but mighty(in personality) dog can send a message to a much larger dog that says back off I'm in charge without making a sound...no growl,no bark, just attitude. They can really pick up on my attitude too. Sort of like " If mama is happy then everbody is happy and vice versa" Regards from all 17 critters at the Airheart compound.
Animals may feel happiness, anger, sadness, and pain, but that is probably about it. Only God knows what, if anything, they feel. I don't believe that my little pup has a soul, but she sure has personality.
Very definately. That is why you need to woo and coo them oftem to let them know they are loved.
My mini schnauzer SMILES!
yes
Of course they do!!! When a dog is happy, it wags it tail. When a dog is sad, it puts its tail between its legs and whimpers.
i dont think they can feel ALL the emotions that humans do! they are animals for goodness sake! imagine a dog chuckling to himself, as if!
Actually I'm not really sure - cats seem to be able to act like they are experiencing emotion, but it's hard to tell if they just want a warm place to hang out.
i think all animals have feelings. A good example are elephants they take care of each others young and seem to grieve one dies

My name is Shelly Parrish. I am currently doing a science project on animal emotions. I am using my two pet chihuahuas to keep an emotion log and prove my theory. Yes, I believe my pets exhibit emotions and they show it in various ways. In my opinion, animals do have feelings and humans need to be aware of this in order to have happy pets.

very good, but it needs more animals in it!!!
The emotion in my beautiful dobies brown eyes is incredible. He knows people by name and when asked where is grandma he immediately finds her and is ecstatically happy. When outside and I am working in the yard he is very serious about "helping " me. He helps carry small logs for the fire in his mouth. His forehead is wrinkled with concentration. He can be very silly, playing with his other dogs and if I laugh at his antics he will be even sillier. He is able to show a range of emotion by the expression on his face and in his actions. Such a love!
I beleive this because my dog appears fustrated and agitaged that the question has not been changed in years.

I have a horse, and when her stable mate died, she went out to where I buried him and stood by his grave for hours at a time. she obviously missed her friend. She also always seems to know how I feel. Sometimes she is giddy and greats me with a smile and other dyas she just hides in her stall and doesn't want to do anything.
Absolutely! Recently, my mother had a day where she just felt sad all day. Both of the dogs in the house were quiet and both of them were very gentle when they approached her. Also, they stayed in the room where she was....they never left her alone all day.

i do think that animals have emotions because if they howal then dose that mean anything at a;ll also if they enjoy being peteded.or if there owners leave them then they get sad and one last thought what do you thinkk about this?
personally i belive that animals DO have emotions. i am doing a school paper ont this topic.
a dogs amygalada (the emotion center of the brain) is larger than a humans. if anything they have a wider spectrum than we do. when you come home and your cat dances around your ankels what is that called?
when i am sick my cat stays a my bed side the whole time. i love my cat and he loves me.
just because they dont look the same as us doesnt mean they cant feel like us.

i beleve that all living things in this world experience emtions various kinds of emotions. animals experience mating, pregnacy, love, smells, food, the same as us so what stops them from being sad, happy, exicted just like us.
