Seth Casteel - Author of UNDERWATER DOGS will join Jon and Talkin' Pets this Saturday at 5 PM EST to discuss and give away his book
In February 2012, Seth Casteel's photos of underwater dogs stormed the Internet, taking over Facebook and Twitter for a combined 150 million views on social media sites. News outlets from National Geographic to the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, The Guardian, and countless others have featured Casteel’s work. Just in time for the holidays, Little, Brown and Company is pleased to announce the publication of award-winning pet
photographer and animal rights activist Casteel’s UNDERWATER DOGS (on-sale October 23, 2012), a gift book featuring stunning photographs of dogs underwater.
Underwater Dogs is a collection of more than eighty portraits, dozens of which have yet to be seen by the world. Casteel’s work is unique among pet photographers—a new way of looking at an old friend, the water lending a vibrant kind of energy that you can’t look away from. On the surface, it seems to be a simple exercise: a dog’s leap, a splash, and then a wet head surfacing with a ball, triumphant.
But beneath the water is a chaotic ballet of bared teeth and bubbles, paddling paws, fur and ears billowing in the currents. From leaping Lab to diving Dachshund, the water is where a dog’s distinct personality shines through; some lounge in the current, paddling slowly, but others arch their bodies to cut through the water with the focus and determination of a shark.
Casteel captures a new side of our old friends with vibrant underwater photography that captivates the viewer. Each image bubbles with exuberance and life, a striking reminder that even in the most lovable and domesticated dog, there are more primal forces at work. In Underwater Dogs, Seth Casteel gives playful and energetic testament to the rough-and-tumble joy that our dogs bring into our lives.
About the Author: Seth Casteel is an award-winning photographer with a passion for working with animals. His series of underwater dog photographs has brought him worldwide attention, entertaining and fascinating millions of animal lovers. As an established member of the animal rescue community, Casteel has been recognized by Time magazine, the Today show, and the Humane Society of the United States for his efforts, and his underwater dog photographs have been featured in the New York Times, on Animal Planet, and in hundreds of other outlets. He is based in Los Angeles and Chicago and is the proud “dad” to two dogs, Nala the Mini-Labradoodle and Fritz the Norwich Terrier.

Janice Stillman editor of "The Old Farmers 2013 Almanac" will join Jon and Talkin' Pets this Saturday at 5 PM EST to discuss the Almanac and give some away to listeners
Janice Stillman
When Janice Stillman joined The Old Farmer's Almanac as Editor in 2000, she made history. Janice is not only the 13th editor in the Almanac's history but also the first female to hold the title.
In her role as Editor, Janice oversees the development of the annual publication, working closely with writers and other editors to develop new and interesting feature content. She also has a hand in the preparation and production of the seasonal All-Seasons Garden Guide, The Old Farmer's Almanac for Kids, and the Almanac's line of calendars.
Raised in Norwood, Massachusetts, Janice earned a degree in English from Fitchburg State and also holds a master's in mass communication from Emerson College.
Janice divides her time between the Almanac's offices in Dublin, New Hampshire, during the week and southern Massachusetts on weekends. She enjoys cooking and bicycling in her spare time, of which she has little in spring, summer, and early autumn: Janice tends a plot and a half at the local community garden.
An almanac, by definition, records and predicts astronomical events (the rising of the Sun, for instance), tides, weather, and other phenomena with respect to time. In recent years, we've expanded the Almanac content—but always with an eye on keeping things fun and practical.
The Old Farmer's Almanac can be defined as:
A Calendar of the Heavens
The Almanac features calendrical and astronomical articles and data (Sun/Moon rise/set times, length of day, tide times, and celestial sightings, and the like).
A Calendar of the Year
Readers are updated on annual and seasonal events, including civil and religious holidays; daily astronomical events; astrological "best" days and cycles; agricultural/gardening and gestation days, and more.
A Time Capsule of the Year
Stories in the Almanac capture the mood, spirit, habits, trends, and/or esoteric interests of the times. (One goal is to produce a "snapshot" of the issue year so that readers looking back in 2, 20, or 200 years will understand and appreciate what life was like.)
A Reference Book
The Old Farmer's Almanac is renowned for offering tips and advice on a variety of topics, often expressed through a feature article, such as the 2005 features, "How to Be a Genius, or at least a little smarter than you are now," which also commemorated the 50th anniversary of Albert Einstein's death, and "How to Win at Pet Shows and County Fairs." (This also explains why the Almanac is often found in the "Reference" section of bookstores and libraries and why we feature many "how-to" or instructional articles.)
