Disclaimer inserted here: If you are offended by sex, drugs, alcohol, bad language and nudity, especially full male nudity than this film may not be for you but for the other 99 percent of the adult movie audience, enjoy it because you will! Peter, a television song writer, is dating a very sexy, popular, overall hot, television actress from "Crime Scene", Sarah Marshall. The infamous name that you'll hear throughout the entire film. On the outside to the average person and the millions that watch entertainment shows like "Access Hollywood", Peter and Sarah's relationship looked perfect. But come on, it's "Hollywood" and nothing is ever perfect. When one of the two want to break up after five years there's usually a reason. From her lips to his ears, "there's someone else". So now comes the time for Peter with the help of his stepbrother, Brian and his wife Liz, to find a girl for him to put his "P" into a new "V"!
After some awkward dates, Peter decides to get away for awhile and what better place than a tropical island resort, Turtle Bay in Hawaii. One of many shameless plugs for a beautiful resort. I should know I've personally been there as a guest of the hotel and it is quite breath-taking. Once Peter arrives in Hawaii he not only meets Rachel who works at the hotel but also in such a small world, bumps into Sarah as well, who happens to not be traveling alone after their break-up three weeks ago. Sarah introduces to Peter her flaky yet intriguing in some promiscuous way new boyfriend Aldous, a well known singer. The rest of the film follows the encounters of one couple, one soon to be couple, the break up of one of the couples, into the almost reconciliation of a couple for all the wrong reasons into the final outcome of true love which like a vampire will never die.
There are many hysterical scenes filled with appropriate score and extremely well written lines projected by a great cast of characters that make this film a definite must see. Albeit, there is one moment that stands out like a pig at a buffet table and I mean the actual pig. Peter and one of the island employees set out to prepare a night of feast and the main course is a pig roast. I for one could have been well enough happy to not see the actual bludgeoning of a poor defenseless pig. No Genesis Award in this films future let alone praise from PETA!
Perfectly mixed into the story is a cast of supporting characters that add moments of outright laughter and raw developed sexual and verbal positions fitting to the Apatow touch. But one thing is true that after a broken heart sometimes the best way to move past the crying, the pain and loneliness is to take a jump. For Peter this leap of faith leads him down the path of reality that proves to him a soft approach to life may answer life's truly hard questions about relationships. Sometimes saying you're sorry is not enough or maybe even too late! Sometimes what looks like a trail through pure fallen snow is actually that of the tire tracks from the devil herself! When you see the film you'll grasp the metaphors.
Overall in the end would you risk black and blue for a picture to prove your love? Peter did and it was well worth it and so is the time invested in this film which fits right up there with others like "Knocked Up", "SuperBad" or "40 Year Old Virgin". So break out those animal instincts and get ready for a film that will surely prove the psychic abilities of Apatow Productions to know what works on the big screen. Segel, was brilliant both dressed and undressed. Bell and Kunis were perfectly cast for their roles along with a superb acting job by Brand. Each supporting character, some used quite often by these producers in other films were all great links to a greatly directed and acted film sure to do extremely well at the box office.
